Status Quo – Scott Florence

November 2011

That's for you, Shakespeare. Photo courtesy of Orleans Young Players.

With the grin of a Fool, Scott Florence claims to be Ottawa’s Shakespeare because he’s willing to borrow ideas from just about anyone. He also seems to like the Bard’s penchant for dramatic resurrection by bringing A Midwinter’s Dream Tale back to the stage, starting November 29 at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, two years after it first played in Ottawa, although drama may not be the exact word for it.

What is your present state of mind?

Befuddled amusement. Mainly due to lack of sleep (new father) and too much laughing (amazing cast I’m working with).

What is your biggest fault?

Using phrases like “Befuddled Amusement.” Who talks like that outside of an Edwardian novel?

Where is your ideal place to live?

On a big old farm with a big old barn where I can make theatre.

When were you happiest?

This moment. No, this one. No, this one… My job is playing. When I’m done work, I go home and play with the new baby. When is there time not to be happy?

Who is your favourite historical figure?

Francis Bacon. He used to spend all his time wishing he was Shakespeare, and now he spends all his time cursing Edward de Vere for stealing his bacon.

What human quality do you most admire?

Patience. And a good sense of humour. And a mischievous disregard for the rules.

What is the most over-rated human virtue?

Patience. And a good sense of humour.

Who is your favourite fictional character?

Shakespeare. He was really Francis Bacon.

What was your greatest misfortune?

To have been born. Life is suffering. Once I figured that out, I got over it and now I just have a good time.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

It’s easier to get forgiveness than permission.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Indian buffets. Extravagant on the pocket book and on consumption.

What is your favourite journey?

The one you take when you start reading a really good book.

What is your greatest regret?

I have none. I can’t regret the things I’ve done – they have made me who I am, and  I can’t regret the things I didn’t do, I can only be pleased that some part of part of me was smart enough not to at the time.

What talent would you most like to have?

You’re suggesting there is a talent I lack?

What is your most treasured possession?

Time. And a stolen French fry. (Which you possess for such a short time it hardly seems worth mentioning.)

What male quality do you most admire?

Depends on the male.

What female quality do you most admire?

All females are quality.

What is your motto?

Go with the Flo.

Art has the potential to…..?

Smash mirrors. Change lightbulbs. Open doors and close shaves. Make sense of a world of dollars. All that and a bag of fish.

What, if anything, scares you about the creative process?

All of it. Hurrah for deadlines! Otherwise I’d never get started.
