Status Quo – Wayne Current

June 2010

Wayne Current has dipped into Ottawa theatre for years, profiling and reviewing much of what he sees in his blog Many Faces of Wayne. He says he’s amazed at how good Ottawa theatre is, and has decided to jump off the high diving board in mid-June when he produces Prisoner’s Dilemma, written by Sterling Lynch, for the Fringe Festival

What is your present state of mind?

I’m feeling kind of scattered these days trying to keep on top of all the bouncing balls for my Fringe show.

What is your biggest fault?

I am a notorious procrastinator. During grad school I was infamous for getting an extension for every paper I wrote, including my thesis.

Where is your ideal place to live?

I’m living here right now – Hintonburg.

When were you happiest?

Why is this question in the past tense? Happiness for me is a fluid state. It is not temporal in any way.

Who is your favourite historical figure?

The Egyptian guy who invented beer. I love that guy.

What human quality do you most admire?

Diligence. I’m working on it.

What is the most over-rated human virtue?

Definitely moderation. If one thing is good, more has to be way better.

Who is your favourite fictional character?

Tough one. When I was a kid it would have been King Arthur. As a child I liked the idea of pulling a sword from a rock and having your destiny unfold. Later, when I grew up and read the adult version (incest with his sister, cheated on by his wife and best friend, death embrace with his son) he became less of a role model. I still like the idea of destiny unfolding from a simple act. Every great story has to start somewhere.

What was your greatest misfortune?

I broke my face skiing when I was 15. That totally sucked.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

To quit CD Warehouse and finish my degree.

What is your greatest extravagance?

This hasn’t happened yet but when it does it will be in Vegas: high-stakes poker with Doyle Brunson to my right and Johnny Chan to my left.

What is your favourite journey?

Going to Bali, Singapore and New Zeland. It was in Auckland where Sterling (Lynch) convinced me that it was time to leave the music store.

What is your greatest regret?

Not seeing Radiohead at Barrymore’s during the Pablo Honey tour – $15 a ticket. Little did I know I would buy every CD they recorded (including the limited vinyl edition of Kid A) and pay $50 to see them in Montreal, outdoors in a huge public park.

What talent would you most like to have?

I am severely lacking in organizational skills. Right now that talent would be the most useful. Thank God for Chloe my stage manager.

What is your most treasured possession?

My guitar or my MacBook Pro.

What male quality do you most admire?

The ability to put up with women.

What female quality do you most admire?

The ability to put up with men.

What is your motto?

Fly with your own wings.

Art has the potential to…..?

Make a profit.  It’s not only possible, but it is also not in any way dirty. Trust me on this one.

What, if anything, scares you about the creative process?

I’m always afraid of creating crap. I’m a perfectionist in the bad sense of the word, but I’m learning to overcome it. The brain’s plasticity is an incredible thing.
